Google is deploying version 5.11 of its health application this week, fundamentally changing how wearable devices record physical activity. The update expands automatic workout recognition from 10 types to 100, aiming to reduce the gap between exertion and digital record. This shift is particularly relevant for working families who rely on wearables to manage health without manual input.

The feature is live now on the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5. The Fitbit Edge will receive the capability when it launches on October 27. The expanded list includes strength training, swimming, and various racket and team sports. Previously, users had to manually select many of these activities to ensure accurate tracking.

Google states the new system uses contextual reasoning to improve precision. It analyzes historical data, manual edits, and established user routines. The company claims this approach makes detections nearly twice as accurate. It also reduces missed workouts by more than half. A session is logged automatically if it lasts at least 15 minutes and shows a sustained elevated heart rate. A summary usually appears in the app within 30 minutes.

Google Health Premium subscribers with a Fitbit Air or Fitbit Edge are receiving two new Health Guardian tools. Blood pressure trend reports are available now for those who wore a Fitbit Air for five or more consecutive days in October. Insulin resistance trends, which track monthly metabolic shifts, are available for users who wore their device for seven or more days and nights during the month. The first detailed reports for these metrics are scheduled for early November.

The update also renames the "Blood glucose" section to "Glucose" and updates associated charts. Users can set custom time-in-range goals for continuous glucose monitor data. In the US, Lingo by Abbott can now connect directly to the app, with readings appearing within 30 minutes. Premium members can query the Google Health Coach about their glucose trends via the Partner Apps menu.

Sleep tracking has been adjusted to better capture short awakenings. The system now incorporates step data to identify brief interruptions, such as getting up to use the bathroom. Users can also delete naps that do not fit their routine directly from the nap card. Version 5.11 is currently rolling out to Android users after its initial release on iOS.
