Couples are proposing in January and December with the same frequency as they do in June, breaking the traditional seasonal pattern for engagement rings. The shift means retailers are selling high-value jewelry items all year long. This change aligns with a broader move toward online shopping for the most expensive piece of jewelry many people buy in their lives.

Quince is one of several online retailers adjusting its inventory to meet this year-round demand. The company sells lab-grown diamond engagement rings priced between $900 and $5,000. Kylie Bee, the merchandise lead for fine jewelry at Quince, explains that the price point is achievable because the company uses a factory-direct model. This approach cuts out supply-chain middlemen and lowers costs for the consumer.

The company offers financing and a return policy that allows customers to return or exchange rings within 60 days. Bee notes that Quince also provides a limited lifetime warranty. These terms are designed to address the hesitation many buyers feel when purchasing high-value items without seeing them in person.

Other online retailers are expanding their offerings in different ways. Blue Nile markets itself on the widest selection of engagement rings and offers a lifetime warranty. Catbird sets its rings in recycled 14k gold or platinum and finishes them by hand in its Williamsburg, Brooklyn studio. The company offers two-day delivery and a 10-day return window.

Angara specializes in made-to-order gemstone rings, including sapphires and emeralds. Prices for these customized pieces range from a few hundred dollars to more than $100,000. Vrai uses a zero-emission river energy process in its American foundry to create lab-grown diamonds. The company states that each carat helps save the climate by crystallizing greenhouse gases.

The rise of these online options reflects a change in how shoppers approach the purchase. Bee advises buyers to measure ring sizes at home using inexpensive tools or by tracing a ring already worn by the partner. She also suggests consulting friends and family to determine preferred diamond shapes, carat weights, and metal colors. Understanding the return policy and warranty is a key step in the process, Bee says. These details help buyers feel confident about their investment.
