U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy is in the hospital following a stroke, a development that places the Connecticut Democrat out of his regular duties during his recovery. Murphy was at his son’s hockey game Saturday afternoon when the symptoms began.

According to Allison Herwitt, the senator’s chief of staff, Murphy started feeling numbness in his arm during the game. He was taken to a local hospital, where medical staff confirmed he had suffered a stroke.

Herwitt said Murphy was subsequently transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for closer observation. She noted that he is currently awake and alert. The medical team is monitoring his condition closely to ensure his progress continues.

In a written statement released Sunday, Herwitt described the doctors’ assessment as encouraging. She said the medical staff are optimistic about his trajectory and expect him to make a full recovery. Herwitt emphasized that Murphy is responding well to the treatment he is receiving.

No further details regarding the specific type of stroke or the expected length of his hospital stay have been released. Murphy remains under the care of his medical team at Johns Hopkins as he continues his recovery.
