Hampton police arrested 26-year-old Alexander Hyatt on Sunday morning after a high-speed chase on Route 101 ended near Rocky Bend. Officers say Hyatt was driving 115 miles per hour at 3:12 a.m. when an officer attempted a traffic stop.
Hyatt turned north onto Ocean Boulevard to evade the stop. The pursuit continued until his vehicle struck a curb. Police reported that Hyatt exited the car, refused to comply with commands, and re-entered the vehicle to drive away.
The car moved a short distance before becoming disabled. Hyatt attempted to flee on foot before officers took him into custody. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and released to Rockingham County Jail.
Police charged Hyatt with aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated, reckless operation, and reckless conduct. He also faces charges for transporting an open container of alcohol, two counts of disobeying a police officer, and resisting arrest.
Chief Alex Reno said the incident combined impaired driving with excessive speed. Reno stated in a Sunday release that the combination created a greater risk to everyone on the roadway. He noted that the incident could have had a much different outcome.
Police reported that neither Hyatt nor officers sustained significant injuries. No property damage was recorded beyond the damage to Hyatt's vehicle. Hyatt is scheduled for arraignment at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2.
