The Chinese artificial intelligence laboratory DeepSeek has secured approximately 100 billion yuan, or roughly 15 billion dollars, in new funding. The transaction, reported by Bloomberg, marks one of the largest capital raises recorded in the country and provides a significant financial boost to the firm. Potential investors for this round include major industry players such as Tencent, the operator of WeChat, and the battery manufacturer CATL.

This capital influx arrives a mere two days after the United States mandated that federal civilian agencies purge DeepSeek's technology from their systems due to security concerns. Despite the restrictions imposed by American authorities, the Hangzhou-based startup continues to aggressively expand its infrastructure and open-model capabilities to serve markets both domestically and abroad. The company's expansion plans could further intensify competition among its domestic rivals.

The latest transaction builds upon a financing round completed in June, where DeepSeek raised more than 7 billion dollars at a valuation of 50 billion dollars. During that period, the company was reportedly seeking an additional 1.5 billion dollars at a valuation of around 71 billion dollars in July, with plans for a potential IPO in China as early as next year. Founder Liang Wenfeng, who previously co-founded the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer, retains an estimated 81.6% stake in its Chinese operating entity following its earlier funding round, according to corporate ownership data analyzed by WireScreen.

The round reflects a broader surge of capital into the global artificial intelligence sector, including within China. Domestic competitors are also attracting significant investment; Moonshot AI, the developer of Kimi, secured 2 billion dollars at a 20 billion dollar valuation in May, while Manus AI raised more than 500 million dollars earlier this month. Public companies in this space, specifically Zhipu AI and MiniMax, have market capitalizations of approximately 29 billion dollars and 7.2 billion dollars, respectively, as of today.

DeepSeek gained widespread global attention in early 2025 following the release of its free-to-use, open-weight R1 reasoning model, which challenged the dominance of U.S. artificial intelligence companies. While the financial details are extensive, DeepSeek did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the funding round.

The transaction comes at a time when the firm faces heightened regulatory scrutiny in the United States regarding security protocols. However, the ability to raise capital from major domestic conglomerates indicates strong support from the Chinese market. The company's financial position remains robust as it seeks to establish itself as a dominant player in the artificial intelligence sector despite international policy shifts.
