Student athletes returning to practice face a specific health risk this fall. Dr. Alicia Bazzano of MedStar Health advises students to stop all sports activities immediately if they have mononucleosis. This pause is necessary to protect an organ that becomes fragile during the infection.

The condition, commonly known as mono, causes the spleen to enlarge. When a student plays sports while their spleen is enlarged, they risk tearing it. Bazzano stated that the virus causes sore throat, fever, and fatigue. However, the physical danger comes from the organ swelling. She told CBS News Baltimore that sports can cause spleen injuries in these patients.

Bazzano noted that adolescents and college students often contract illnesses in crowded settings. These groups frequently share drinks and socialize in tight quarters. The doctor emphasized that the flu also requires rest for children of all ages. She said the flu is one illness that keeps kids home for several days. She added that patients should not dismiss other conditions like meningitis.

The advice comes as the school year begins. The season for colds and the flu is already active. Bazzano works at MedStar Health, a network in the Baltimore area. Her comments were part of an interview discussing common diseases among young adults. The primary goal of her guidance is to prevent avoidable physical damage during the illness.
