Frank Jereis is competing for a State Assembly seat in Yonkers by visiting voters in their homes. The 25 year old Democrat has spent nearly ten months since the start of the primary campaign knocking on more than 5,000 doors. He said he has worn out four pairs of shoes during this period.
Jereis visits neighborhoods, union halls, and train stations to talk with residents. He holds these conversations despite receiving support from labor unions and elected officials. This strategy focuses on face to face interaction rather than traditional advertising.
The district is a competitive area for political control. Governor Kathy Hochul received low approval ratings in the 2022 election results. Because of this, candidates view direct outreach as a necessary method to connect with voters in the district.
Jereis is the youngest candidate in the race if he wins. He aims to bring a new generation of leadership to Albany. His opponent is John Isaac. Early voting for the race has already started and will run until Sunday.
The general election takes place on November 3. Jereis believes that grassroots efforts can overcome the influence of established political figures. He continues to visit doorsteps throughout the campaign to secure votes.
