Anne Arundel County Police are investigating a fatal two-car collision that claimed the life of a local resident on Wednesday afternoon. The crash occurred near the Solomons Island Road and Jewell Road intersection in Friendship. One person was killed and two others suffered serious injuries in the incident.

Officers responded to the scene around 2:10 p.m. Investigators determined that a Mercedes sedan was stopped at a stop sign on eastbound Jewell Road. A Honda Accord traveling south on Solomons Island Road struck the driver’s side of the Mercedes. The impact proved fatal for the Mercedes driver.

Police identified the woman in the Mercedes as Wendy Sue Fleegal Cox, 70. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda and his female passenger were both 86 years old. Both survivors are residents of Harwood. They were transported by air to an area hospital where medical staff listed their condition as critical but stable.

The Crash Reconstruction Team from Anne Arundel County Police is leading the inquiry into the crash. The team is examining the intersection to determine exactly how the vehicles entered the roadway and why the collision occurred. No preliminary cause has been released as of this report.

The accident disrupted traffic on Solomons Island Road and Jewell Road for several hours following the impact. Emergency crews worked to clear the scene and transport the injured. The two victims in critical condition remain hospitalized as officers continue to collect evidence at the site.
