Arsenal now sits level with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table after securing a 2-0 victory over Everton in heavy rain at the Emirates Stadium. This win on Saturday allowed the Gunners to erase the three-point lead City held. Both clubs now possess 21 points after eight matches, creating a tightly contested battle for the title as the season progresses.
The opportunity for Arsenal emerged because City suffered their first defeat of the season. At Aston Villa, Nicolas Jackson scored twice to help Unai Emery’s side beat the visitors 2-1. That result not only ended City’s unbeaten start to the league but also handed Villa their first home league win of the campaign and their third straight league victory over the champions.
Arsenal started aggressively in north London. Martin Odegaard delivered a corner that caused chaos in the Everton box. Although Jordan Pickford stopped the initial effort, the ball was not cleared. Ezri Konsa bundled it in from close range in the seventh minute. This marked his first goal for the club and broke a thirteen-game drought for set-piece goals in all competitions since May.
The second goal came in the 68th minute and featured two players marking significant milestones. Ben White, playing his 200th game for Arsenal, clipped a cross to the far post. Gabriel headed the ball home on his 200th Premier League appearance. Konsa noted the importance of consistency for a champion team, stating, 'We are champions and to be champions you've got to win games consistently.'
In the Villa Park match, Jackson put the hosts ahead in the sixth minute after stealing the ball from Marc Guehi. Erling Haaland leveled the score just after halftime by heading in a free-kick from Iliman Ndiaye. However, Jackson regained the lead on the hour, finishing a cutback from Ibrahim Mbaye with a shot that slipped under goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. City remains under a cloud regarding their off-field financial case, having committed 114 breaches of financial rules according to an independent commission.
Elsewhere in the matchweek, Tottenham Hotspur achieved a historic 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This was only their second league victory at the ground in 36 years. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders punched a corner into his own net in the 77th minute. Mathys Tel sealed the result late in the game. Spurs moved up to 12th, while Chelsea remained fourth. Fulham also secured a 1-0 win over Coventry City, with Oscar Bobb scoring in the 80th minute to move Fulham to 13th and leave Coventry in 19th.
The next phase of the season will test these new leaders as they navigate their fixtures. City will continue to manage the pressure of their financial appeal while trying to recover their form. Arsenal will look to maintain their momentum at home. The league table has tightened significantly, suggesting that every remaining match will be crucial in determining who eventually claims the title.
