Freshman Guard Brings Championship Expectations to Fresno State Roster

Fourteen consecutive Central Section titles define the basketball legacy at Clovis West, and Ryleigh Schoonover is bringing that specific culture to the Fresno State campus this season. The former Golden Eagles standout is set to begin her collegiate career with the Bulldogs, entering the roster as part of a highly regarded incoming freshman group.

The high school program has maintained an identity built on sustained excellence for more than a decade. Coach Craig Campbell of Clovis West noted that the team aims to remain competitive annually, even if they do not secure the trophy every year. He described the objective as consistently challenging for the title, a mindset that Schoonover is now carrying into her new athletic environment.

Rather than relocating to a distant university, Schoonover chose to stay within her home region. She emphasized the personal significance of representing the local area while playing for Fresno State. Schoonover noted that the valley logo on her jersey holds a unique meaning for residents that outsiders may not fully appreciate.

Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy has expressed strong confidence in the newcomer's abilities. He identified Schoonover as the top athlete in the local area for her graduating class of 2026. McCarthy stated that her performance during the evaluation period immediately validated his assessment of her talent.

Schoonover enters the program with extensive experience competing for championships. She now joins a roster that is aiming for a Pac-12 conference title. The freshman credited Campbell for preparing her for the intensity of college competition, noting that the standard of excellence remains consistent across both levels of play.

McCarthy highlighted how her background in a winning high school program has equipped her for the demands of the college court. He explained that her history of success sets a specific expectation for her performance whenever she steps onto the floor for the Bulldogs.

The team’s official season begins in less than two weeks, with a matchup against UC Merced scheduled to open the slate. Schoonover is currently preparing for her first appearance at the Save Mart Center, marking the start of her professional athletic journey.

Campbell believes the most significant growth for Schoonover is still ahead. He suggested that her current level of play only hints at her potential, describing her as a gifted athlete who is still in the early stages of developing her full capabilities for the college program.
