Comcast has notified 634 employees at its Philadelphia headquarters that their positions will be eliminated as part of a company-wide organizational overhaul. The telecommunications giant is undergoing a fundamental redesign of its structure to improve agility and service delivery, according to a notice filed with the Pennsylvania labor department.
Affected workers are receiving two months' notice before their roles end on December 31, 2026. In specific instances, employees will remain on the payroll until December 31, 2027. Comcast stated it will attempt to place impacted staff into existing vacancies or one of approximately 500 new roles planned for its corporate towers at 1701 JFK Blvd. and 1800 Arch St.
The Philadelphia cuts are part of a larger reduction. The company is also eliminating 119 jobs in New Jersey and 159 in Washington. Across its U.S. campuses, Comcast intends to create more than 1,100 new positions as it reorganizes. The firm asserts that none of the workers facing these cuts belong to a union.
Employees who do not transition to a different role within the company will be entitled to severance benefits. The decision impacts the workforce in Philadelphia, where the company was founded and which it describes as central to its identity.
"Comcast is fundamentally redesigning our organization to build a more agile company and better serve our customers," the company wrote in its WARN notice. "These changes will help us accelerate innovation and compete more effectively in a rapidly changing industry."
The restructuring arrives shortly after Comcast announced plans to divide into two separate entities. The proposed split, which is pending regulatory approval, would spin off NBCUniversal entertainment properties, including NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, Peacock, and Universal Pictures, into a standalone company. The remaining Comcast entity would focus on broadband and wireless services. The separation process is expected to continue through 2027.
