Philadelphia Flyers fans faced another setback as the team lost 5-2 to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night. The result extended the Flyers' losing streak to three games and brought their season total to 12 losses in 15 contests. The defeat also marked their third loss in six games against Metropolitan Division opponents, a record that now stands at 0-3-3.
The Capitals struck early in the opening period to establish a 1-0 lead less than two minutes after the faceoff. Alex Tuch scored the goal after a rebound from the slot. The Flyers answered early in the second period when captain Sean Couturier scored his first goal of the season. Couturier redirected a shot from Nick Seeler behind Logan Thompson to tie the game 1-1.
Washington regained the lead shortly after the equalizer. Jordan Kyrou scored on a rebound after Joseph Woll stopped a shot by Dylan Strome. The Flyers attempted a comeback but faced defensive challenges. They took two penalties in the third period, including a tripping call against Porter Martone and a penalty for Jacob Gaucher defending Alex Bump. Although Washington did not score during either power play, Aliaksei Protas tipped in a shot from Matt Roy to extend the Capitals' lead to 3-1.
The Flyers reduced the deficit to 3-2 with a power-play goal in the third period. Trevor Zegras won the faceoff and passed to Jamie Drysdale, who moved the puck before returning it to Zegras. Zegras shot the puck, which deflected off Timothy Liljegren to Denver Barkey. Barkey passed to Matvei Michkov for the empty-net goal. Michkov now has nine goals, tying him for the fourth-most in the league, and five power-play goals, which is the second-most in the NHL.
Kyrou restored Washington's two-goal cushion just over a minute later. Jack St. Ivany, making his Capitals debut after joining the team via waiver on Oct. 24, delivered two assists on the play. The shot hit Dylan Strome and Nick Seeler before Kyrou scored. St. Ivany had two assists in the game.
Alex Tuch added an empty-netter in the final minutes to seal the 5-2 victory. The Flyers pulled their goalie Joseph Woll with four minutes remaining during a man advantage after Hunter McDonald drew a penalty. The Flyers recorded seven shot attempts in that sequence, but Woll allowed four goals on 29 shots in the game. The team's power play is currently ranked 24th in the NHL with a 16.3% efficiency.
Noel Acciari played in his 600th NHL game before leaving early in the first period with an upper-body injury. He was later cleared to return. The Flyers have three days off before hosting the Utah Mammoth at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
