Julian Lewis, the starting quarterback for the University of Colorado, is recovering from a medical emergency that occurred during practice on Wednesday. The 19-year-old was transported to a hospital shortly after the incident at the Buffaloes' facility. His father, T. Carlton Lewis, confirmed the situation in a statement posted to X on Thursday. "He is recovering and thankful to his medical team, teammates, and Colorado fans for their prayers and support," T. Carlton Lewis wrote. He asked for privacy for the family and said they would not provide further comment at this time.
Lewis started the first four games of the 2026 season for the Buffaloes. His final start came in a 23-13 loss to Baylor on Sept. 26. He was subsequently benched in favor of junior Isaac Wilson. Wilson has been 0-3 since taking over as the starter, contributing to the team's 2-5 record. Head coach Deion Sanders indicated on Tuesday that he had not ruled out returning to Lewis. "That's on him," Sanders told reporters. "I don't treat people unfairly. I don't play games with young men and their careers and hate on folks."
Sanders emphasized his approach to player relationships, noting that he is "too forgiving and very, very kind." He referenced punter Damon Greaves as an example of this treatment. "You've got to always understand that we may know a little more than you do, because we're inside the locker room," Sanders said. The coaching staff has not yet addressed the specific medical details of Lewis's condition publicly.
In his four starts this season, Lewis completed 61 of 95 pass attempts for a 64.2% completion rate. He accounted for 733 passing yards, six passing touchdowns, and two interceptions. Lewis also scored one rushing touchdown. He entered the season as a four-star recruit in the class of 2025. The Buffaloes are scheduled to host Kansas State at noon on Saturday.
The university has not released an official statement regarding the hospitalization. Lewis's family requested that well-wishers respect their privacy during his recovery. The team continues its preparation for the upcoming game against the Wildcats. Sanders maintained that the coaching staff understands the internal dynamics of the locker room while managing the team's roster decisions.
