Barack Obama told Ohio voters on Saturday that the United States spent two trillion dollars on a war with Iran that nobody asked for. The former president used the figure to frame his argument against the current administration during a campaign rally.
Obama criticized President Donald Trump for making a series of bad decisions in his second term. He described the period as two years of chaos, cruelty, corruption, and incompetence. Obama urged local residents to vote for the Republican opposition to signal that enough is enough.
The speech addressed the contentious gubernatorial contest between Democrat Amy Acton and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy recently aired an attack ad featuring Donna Arthur, Acton's mother. Arthur disputes Acton's account of childhood homelessness and sexual abuse by a stepfather, asking voters not to support her daughter.
Acton stated that she has not seen her mother since 1978. Her brother supports her version of events, noting that the stepfather, who died in 2004, faced rape charges. Obama stood by Acton, saying she spoke movingly about her experiences with abuse, neglect, and homelessness.
Former Senator Sherrod Brown shared the stage with Acton and Obama. Brown is seeking to unseat incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted. Current polls show Democrats holding a slight lead in both the governor's and senatorial races, though the margin is narrow.
