Congressional races in Texas have often drawn national attention, but a recent detention in North Texas has added a layer of personal danger to the political landscape. A 17-year-old resident of McKinney has been accused by federal investigators of plotting to assassinate Representative Keith Self, a claim confirmed to NBC 5 by the lawmaker's campaign officials.

The arrest took place on October 5, with the congressman's team learning of the detention the following day through U.S. Capitol Police. Federal agents reportedly believed the teenager had been radicalized and was under active monitoring. Investigators indicated that the suspect was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS, with a specific focus on targeting Self during a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was set to feature former Cowboys players and several high-profile guests, raising the stakes for the security team.

Rep. Self, who is currently seeking a third term representing Texas’ third congressional district, stated that his team responded to the threat by heightening their vigilance. The campaign manager noted that while the congressman already had adequate security, the team adjusted their situational awareness in light of the new information. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for further details but had not responded as of the latest update from the newsroom.

The congressman cited his military background as a key factor in his calm reaction to the news. He explained that his experience deploying to combat zones helped him process the threat without the panic that might affect someone without that history. Self said he understood the importance of determining if the suspect was a lone wolf and that the arrest itself signaled the primary danger had been neutralized. He noted that while the situation was serious, it was less traumatic for him than it might have been for colleagues without military exposure.

His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, was also deeply involved in the response. Self said she understood the inherent risks of his position and took the threat very seriously. This was not the first time the congressman had received threats, but this incident marked a significant escalation because it resulted in a federal arrest. He emphasized that the seriousness of the plot was clear based on the information provided by investigators.

Despite the alleged plot, Self attended the chili cook-off as planned on October 17. He judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans during the event, noting that nothing happened and that it was a delightful experience. The congressman used the appearance to demonstrate that the threat would not alter his schedule or his engagement with the public.

Since the incident, Self has continued his campaign activities, including poll greeting and meeting voters. He stated that the plot would not deter him from alerting the American people to what he describes as a specific political ideology. He plans to continue doing his job and staying visible to his constituents.

The arrest coincides with Self's prominent stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the United States. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land. This political positioning aligns with debates in his district, where McKinney recently approved a site plan for a mosque expansion amidst contentious public comment and efforts to recall several council members.

The political fallout has extended to his opponent in the midterm election, Evan Hunt. Hunt condemned the alleged assassination plot in a social media post, joining the chorus of local figures reacting to the news. As the investigation continues, the teenager's identity has not been released to the public, keeping the focus on the broader implications for the congressional race.

For voters in the Mid-Atlantic and across the nation, this incident highlights the increasing intersection of local politics and national security concerns. As early voting continues across the state, the case serves as a reminder of the personal risks faced by elected officials who take strong stances on polarizing issues.
