Major UK retailers have released their Christmas advertisements for 2026, deploying a mix of literary parodies, nostalgic cameos, and emotional reunions to capture consumer attention. The campaign slate includes spots from Argos, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Debenhams, alongside a high-profile entry from the US chain Walmart. These releases mark the start of the competitive advertising period that precedes the John Lewis announcement.
Argos launched a spot titled Tales of Argos Past, which serves as a comedic retelling of A Christmas Carol. Richard Ayoade stars as the Scrooge figure, struggling to select a gift for his mother. Two toy characters named Connie and Trevor appear as ghosts to guide him. The narrative culminates in Ayoade purchasing a red light therapy mask, a move intended to showcase products beyond traditional toys. Ayoade noted that he enjoys the act of circling, whether in aircraft, on roundabouts, or in catalogues. He described the role as a unique chance to combine his love for circling with Christmas joy.
Sainsbury’s continued its three year run of featuring Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant. In this installment, the BFG catches a cold and remains isolated in Giant Country. A Sainsbury’s employee named Annie and a colleague travel through hostile territory to deliver a meal to his doorstep. The story reinforces the brand's previous themes of friendship and kindness between the human and giant characters.
Tesco’s campaign centers on a reunion between two old friends. Roisin Conaty plays Polly, a delivery driver, who recognizes the name of a customer, Lizzie, played by Anna Maxwell Martin. The two meet to resolve a delivery mix-up and drive home together in Polly’s van, reminiscing about their shared past. Polly receives a text inviting her to join Lizzie’s meal, highlighting a theme of rekindling long lost connections.
Walmart released a sequel to the 1992 film The Muppet Christmas Carol under the title A Who Knew? Carol. The production features a full cast of Muppets, with Gonzo as Dickens, Kermit as Bob Cratchit, and Miss Piggy as Emily. Walton Goggins, known for his role in Fallout, returns as Scrooge. He previously played the Grinch in a Walmart spot. Metro’s Senior Film and Entertainment Reporter Tori Brazier identified this as the best Christmas TV advert of the year, praising the faithful adherence to the original film’s tone.
Debenhams released its spot in October, ahead of the UK clock change. The commercial features Emily Atack as Tina and Mathew Horne as Chris, a former romantic interest. Set in a village hall during a snowstorm, the story includes a serenade by Horne and a surprise appearance by music artist Gabrielle. Atack described the filming experience as warm and nostalgic, citing the talented cast and the campaign’s focus on reconnecting with family and friends.
The release of these advertisements signals the official start of the festive retail season. Brands are using celebrity power and well known cultural references to drive engagement. The presence of both British and American campaigns indicates a global coordination in holiday marketing strategies.
