The Philadelphia 76ers have won six of their first seven games, a record that has prompted head coach Nick Nurse to credit the front office for specific offseason moves.
Nurse attributed the team’s early success to the work of general manager Mike Gansey, who secured the services of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown. However, Nurse emphasized that the addition of Dean Wade and Anfernee Simons provided critical stability to the roster.
The Sixers face a roster burdened by injury risks. Joel Embiid was listed as questionable for Monday’s game against the Chicago Bulls due to right foot plantar fascia. He warmed up and started the contest. The team must also manage the workload for the aging James, as well as the increasing minutes played by Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and VJ Edgecombe.
Nurse stated that the team needed shooting, another guard, and a versatile four. He described Wade and Simons as coveted free agents who fit those needs. "We needed Dean’s versatility at the four man. He can space. He can rebound. He can switch," Nurse said. He noted that Simons acts as a speed shooter who does not require much space to operate.
When asked for advice during the offseason, Nurse replied, "Get ’em." He explained that the two players were high priorities because they filled positional gaps. Nurse added that these players will become prominent as the 82-game schedule progresses and starters sit for rest.
Simons has made defensive play a priority this season, a shift noted by Nurse. "He’s playing very good defense, he’s giving a good effort," the coach said. Nurse recalled telling Simons, "that’s good, because we’re going to ask you to play good defense." He added that the team’s defensive intensity requires all players to contribute when the main unit is on the floor.
The Sixers’ wins have not always been dominant, but Nurse said they have shown necessary attributes like rebounding and hustle. Dominick Barlow remains sidelined with a lower back stress injury. He is scheduled for an appointment on Tuesday to assess his progress.
The team’s current depth allows them to maintain performance levels while managing player availability. Nurse indicated that the recent acquisitions have provided the necessary tools to sustain the squad through the season.
