Gotham FC clinched the NWSL Shield for the best regular-season record on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over the Utah Royals. The match concluded a Decision Day slate where all 16 league teams played simultaneously to finalize standings. Gotham finished the season with an 18-5-7 record, securing the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
Guro Reiten and Jaedyn Shaw provided the goals for Gotham. Ann-Katrin Berger preserved the clean sheet with two saves, marking her 11th of the season. Shaw expressed the team's relief in a post-game comment, stating, “This was obviously amazing to win the shield. We are so happy to finally achieve this.”
The top seed grants Gotham home field advantage throughout the postseason. The team will host the No. 8 seed Seattle Reign in the quarterfinals next Sunday. Reign clinched their playoff spot with a 1-0 home win over the Orlando Pride. Jordyn Bugg scored the decisive goal off a corner kick in the 68th minute.
San Diego Wave locked down the second seed with a 1-0 road victory over Bay FC. Defender Mimi Van Zanten scored in the ninth minute. The Wave, who finished 18-8-4, will host the seventh-seeded Utah Royals on Friday. Washington Spirit secured the third seed with a 2-0 win over the Chicago Stars, while Kansas City Current took the fourth seed with a 2-0 result over Racing Louisville.
North Carolina forward Ashley Sanchez won the Golden Boot with 20 regular-season goals. She matched the single-season record set by Temwa Chawinga in 2024. Sanchez will miss the playoffs for the second time in league history, joining Sam Kerr who led the scoring in 2017 while playing for Sky Blue FC.
Sophia Wilson reached a career-high 15 goals in a 2-0 win for Portland Thorns over Houston Dash. Wilson is the first NWSL player to score more than 10 goals in four separate seasons. Her tally includes a penalty in the 70th minute that was retaken after goalkeeper Jane Campbell saved the initial attempt.
