Walter Koenig, the actor best known for portraying Ensign Pavel Chekov in the 1960s science fiction series Star Trek, died on Sunday at the age of 90. A representative for the actor confirmed the death, citing natural causes. Koenig was found at his home in North Hollywood, California.
The news prompted tributes from former castmates who worked alongside him for decades. William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk throughout the entire three-season run of the original series, shared his grief on the social media platform X on Tuesday. Shatner stated that he was deeply saddened by the news of his colleague's passing.
Koenig joined the Star Trek cast in 1967 for the second season. He continued the role through the third season, which aired in 1969. The two leads later appeared together in six Star Trek feature films. Shatner noted that their off-screen relationship was not particularly close, but they shared a long professional history across television and cinema.
Shatner emphasized Koenig's relationship with the fan base in his tribute. He observed that Koenig rarely stayed behind a table at conventions to simply sign memorabilia. Instead, the actor preferred to mix with the audience members who had supported the franchise for many years. Shatner described this genuine connection as a rare quality that would be remembered by those who met him.
George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in all three seasons of the original series, also paid homage to Koenig. Takei posted a message on Facebook on Monday, arguing that the actor was far more than his fictional character. He highlighted Koenig's work as a writer and a teacher, as well as his status as a thoughtful man and loyal friend.
Takei expressed gratitude to the fans who had supported Koenig for so many years. He noted that the actor reciprocated that affection. The message concluded with a farewell, wishing his friend rest and a steady course.
Koenig’s career in Star Trek began in the second season of the original series. He appeared in subsequent television episodes and the associated film franchise. His death marks the passing of a key figure from the show's original crew, which aired from 1966 to 1969.
