Abubakarr Barrie, 23, could spend the rest of his life in prison for taking a teenager from a ride-share pickup and stabbing her in a basement apartment in Baltimore. A judge in the Wabash District Court ordered the Uber Eats driver held without bail on Monday afternoon after he was charged with nine counts related to the incident.
The attack occurred on Thursday at a rental house on Garrison Boulevard near Barrington Road in northwest Baltimore. According to police records, Barrie was operating an unlicensed taxi when he picked up the 15-year-old victim. She had requested a ride to a takeout restaurant. Instead, Barrie drove her to his basement unit in the 3700 block of Garrison Boulevard. Police say he became violent immediately upon arrival and told the girl to put away her phone and not to scream.
The victim survived by fighting back. She struck Barrie with a fire extinguisher and eventually escaped the apartment naked and covered in blood. She ran approximately 10 minutes to the 3800 block of Belle Avenue, where an unidentified neighbor allowed her to use a phone to call 911 and her mother. Police located Barrie by tracking the victim's phone, which he had taken from her. They identified him using a Cash App number he had provided to the girl for payment. He was driving a white Hyundai Elantra at the time.
Barrie remained silent during his court appearance. His public defender told the judge that the defendant maintains his innocence. Court documents indicate Barrie had lived in the Garrison Boulevard apartment for only one month. His attorney stated that Barrie was preparing to take his GED test. While he has a criminal record with no prior convictions, probation services noted a history of suicide attempts, prompting his lawyer to request monitoring while he is in custody.
Neighbors near the crime scene expressed shock. Shana Kay, who lives across the street, said she had never seen Barrie before the incident. She said the attack happened right outside her front door. Kay said her daughter likes taking taxis, but she now feels fear. Another neighbor, who lives next to Barrie and asked not to be named, said she had not noticed anything unusual previously but distrusted the people around her.
Police reported that the victim suffered at least five stab wounds and a collapsed lung. Doctors expect her to survive her injuries. Her family has been contacted by investigators for comments. The next step in the legal process will be the scheduling of a preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial.
Barrie faces first-degree attempted murder, which carries a potential sentence of life in prison if convicted. He also faces eight other charges. The case has drawn attention to safety concerns for young riders using ride-share services in the city.
