Calvin Ball is leaving Howard County leadership to take charge of Baltimore City Community College.
Ball has served as Howard County Executive since 2018, a role he retained after winning re-election in 2022. He will formally step down on November 16. His new appointment as interim president of Baltimore City Community College begins on January 1, 2027. The transition occurs after Dr. Debra McCurdy retired from the presidency, having served in that capacity for seven years.
The move represents a return for Ball, who previously directed the Complete College Baltimore program at the college before his initial election in 2018. In a social media statement, Ball described the role as a "full-circle moment" for an institution that holds a "special place in my heart." He noted that while his time in county office is ending, his commitment to public service continues.
Between Ball’s departure on November 16 and the inauguration of the newly elected executive on December 7, Brandee Ganz will serve as Acting County Executive. Ganz currently holds the position of Chief Administrative Officer for Howard County. The short interim period ensures continuity in county operations during the leadership gap.
Dr. Roger Ward, the interim chair of the Baltimore City Community College Board of Trustees, framed the appointment as a chance to honor past service while renewing the institution's mission. Ward thanked Dr. McCurdy for her "dedicated leadership and service," noting that she brought "resolve, experience, and a deep commitment" during a period requiring steady leadership. The board plans to release more details regarding the search for a permanent president in the coming months.
