Syria’s military presence in the south has intensified since the government change in late 2024, prompting fresh public demonstrations on Friday.
Crowds gathered in Damascus and Homs to condemn Israeli operations in the Quneitra and Daraa provinces. In Daraa, an AFP correspondent observed hundreds of protesters, some waving national flags.
The rallies centered on the killing of Moaz, a man with special needs who died during an incursion earlier in the week. State television broadcast footage of marchers holding posters that read, "We are all Moaz."
Taysir al-Hariri, a protester in Daraa, told AFP that the group aimed to "send a message to the world" that Syria is united against incursions and threats to national security.
In Damascus, the family of a man detained by Israeli forces gathered outside a United Nations building. Their children held signs that said, "I want my dad."
State media reported that Israeli forces blocked several roads in Quneitra province on Friday. Reports indicated that troops bulldozed olive groves, established checkpoints, and detained residents in the area. Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes and entered a UN-patrolled buffer zone since December 2024. The military maintains a goal of creating a demilitarized security zone in the region.
