Andoni Iraola has selected 19-year-old Trey Nyoni to start for Liverpool against Arsenal on Sunday, a decision that former teammate Jamie Carragher believes may mark a turning point for Ryan Gravenberch. The young midfielder has received his first Premier League start in a high-profile match at Anfield, displacing the Dutchman from the lineup.
Nyoni has made 20 appearances for the club, with 14 occurring in the current season. He has already secured a starting position in the Champions League. Carragher described the selection as a significant blow for Gravenberch, noting that it is rare for an established player to fully recover from being passed over for a younger prospect in such a prominent fixture.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher drew a parallel to his own career under manager Roy Evans, who selected Michael Thomas for him in central midfield. He stated that while the senior player can return, the psychological shift is profound. Carragher said, 'It’s always difficult for the senior player to ever recover from that.' He added that the manager’s trust in a 19-year-old who is 'only getting better' creates a narrative that is hard to shake.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright suggested that Iraola’s choice reflects a high level of confidence gained during training sessions. Wright noted that the manager must have been impressed by Nyoni’s performance off the ball to justify the selection in a game of this magnitude. Wright said, 'It’s obviously not just on his games,' implying that daily work has earned the teenager this opportunity.
Iraola explained the decision by emphasizing Nyoni’s comprehensive skill set. The manager stated that the teenager has shown he possesses the required level, noting he is 'very good on the ball' and 'very good without the ball.' Iraola highlighted Nyoni’s ability to cover space, his aggression in defense, and his calmness in possession. The manager said the team trusts Nyoni '100 per cent' for the challenge ahead.
Teammate Milos Kerkez also praised Nyoni’s work ethic, describing him as a 'really hard worker' who demonstrates quality on the ball. Kerkez noted that the team will assist the teenager in feeling comfortable during the match. Gravenberch and Nyoni started together in the Carabao Cup against Chelsea on Wednesday, where Liverpool advanced on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Alexis Mac Allister has joined the starting lineup alongside Nyoni behind Florian Wirtz for the upcoming clash.
The selection positions Nyoni directly behind Wirtz, with Szoboszlai also available on the bench following his return from injury. Iraola’s tactical choice prioritizes the younger midfielder’s dynamic attributes over Gravenberch’s established experience for this specific encounter.
