The White House is pushing Viktor Orbán for the position of United Nations secretary-general.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration did not merely support the former Hungarian prime minister’s decision to run; they suggested the idea to him. The strategy relies on securing the backing of Russia and China to form a unified front against other candidates.

A State Department official under the current administration acknowledged that the move appears unusual at first glance. However, recent diplomatic exchanges suggest that Moscow and Beijing are on board. The plan is to present Orbán as the joint candidate of these three major powers. Officials from the United States and another country noted that when Washington, Moscow, and Beijing align on a goal in the UN Security Council, they typically succeed.

The White House is counting on a specific vote tally to secure the appointment. One representative identified eight votes in the Security Council that would support Orbán comfortably. The administration believes it can potentially secure another ten votes out of the fifteen total members.

American officials describe Orbán as the ideal candidate for the administration’s conservative base. One official called him the dream MAGA-conservative choice. This assessment stems from his political record, which includes actions against mass migration, liberal non-governmental organizations, and left-leaning courts and media. His frequent clashes with the European Union, even while receiving its subsidies, and his pro-China stance have not diminished his image as a defender of Western civilization.

President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to support the candidacy once it is formalized. A source familiar with the process indicated that the announcement will wait until after the US midterm elections. American officials have already contacted Orbán to gauge his interest. He responded positively, though he attached conditions to his participation.

Comparisons between Orbán and other contenders focus on their professional backgrounds. A representative from a second country noted that remaining candidates are heavy on the secretary side, with extensive experience in international bureaucracy and behind-the-scenes diplomacy. Orbán, in contrast, would be the general. A State Department representative agreed, stating that he adheres to the correct ideology and knows how to exercise power under hostile conditions without being intimidated by the establishment.
