Lamar Jackson completed exactly one pass before leaving the field.
That single throw marked the end of his appearance against the Buffalo Bills.
The Baltimore Ravens lost the game 36 to 10.
Coach Jesse Minter announced that Jackson requires surgery.
The quarterback will move to injured reserve.
Minter said the injury could possibly end the season.
Jackson had been sidelined for the previous three weeks with a high ankle sprain.
He spoke to the team before the game to boost morale.
Cornerback Marlon Humphrey noted that Jackson rarely speaks, but his words carry weight.
On the opening play, right tackle Roger Rosengarten attempted to block outside linebacker Greg Rousseau.
Rousseau broke through the block and struck Jackson's hand while the quarterback threw.
Jackson immediately exited the field, displaying his damaged thumb to the crowd and cameras officials ruled him out shortly after the play ended right tackle Roger Rosengarten accepted the blame for the breakdown. He said he needed to create more space for Jackson. Tight end Mark Andrews praised Jackson for fighting through his ankle injury to return. "He fought his butt off to get to where he needed to be," Andrews said. Running back Justice Hill described the moment as crazy. The Ravens had recently traded for center Cam Jurgens to address the injury to Tyler Linderbaum. Jackson took one snap from Jurgens before leaving. Tyler Huntley entered the game as the starter. Huntley suffered a toe injury during the contest. Emergency third-string quarterback Joe Fagnano, an undrafted rookie, took over. Fagnano completed 10 of 21 pass attempts. He did not connect with wide receiver Zay Flowers. Flowers has never finished a game without a catch in his career. "I was upset," Flowers said about seeing Jackson leave. "I want him to play, so upset." Flowers explained that losing two quarterbacks creates a difficult situation for the team. "It's different when you lose not one, but two of your quarterbacks," Flowers said. Fagnano completed his first two passes but faced constant pressure. He took a sack on his third play. He received a roughing the passer penalty on his fourth drive. He later iced his ankle on the sidelines. Running back Derrick Henry said the team has nine games remaining. "We have to go work with whoever is out there," Henry said. The Ravens' playoff chances dropped to 25 percent according to The New York Times simulator. The team must prepare for a Thursday night game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in four days. General manager Eric DeCosta has been working to stabilize the roster. The locker room mood was grim as players left the field. Team leaders told the group to move forward. The offense struggled to find rhythm without its primary signal caller. The defense kept the score close until the third quarter. Minter said the team reached for big plays and exposed themselves to mistakes. "You kind of get to a point where you're really kind of searching and reaching for plays," Minter said. The Ravens now face a season with a fourth-string quarterback listed on the depth chart. Justice Hill is expected to be ready for any moment. Fagnano admitted he is not 100 percent healthy after the hits he took. The team must adjust its game plan immediately. The injury to Jackson changes the outlook for the remainder of the schedule. Players expressed confidence in the next man up. The focus shifts to the upcoming matchup in Baltimore.
