Miro Heiskanen decided the game for the Dallas Stars without recording a goal. At 3:47 of overtime, he passed to Roope Hintz, who scored the winning goal to secure a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at American Airlines Center.
The play began with a defensive stop by Jason Robertson. Robertson blocked a Winnipeg scoring chance and immediately handed the puck to Heiskanen. Heiskanen then sent Hintz on a breakaway. This sequence turned a defensive recovery into an immediate offensive threat.
Heiskanen played 29 minutes and 20 seconds on the night. He was the most used defenseman for Dallas. Thomas Harley played 28 minutes and 27 seconds. The next highest total belonged to Lian Bichsel, who played 17 minutes and 47 seconds. Nils Lundkvist, Tyler Myers, and Kyle Capobianco also saw time on the ice.
Dallas trailed for much of the game. Jonathan Johnston scored early in the second period for Winnipeg. Gabriel Vilardi and Kyle Connor added goals later in that period to put the Jets ahead. The Stars stayed behind until Hintz scored a six-on-five equalizer with two minutes remaining in regulation.
Winnipeg goaltender Connor Skinner made 35 saves. He limited the Stars to their three goals despite the Dallas team outshooting Winnipeg 38-19. The high shot count showed that the Stars generated more chances but needed the overtime finish to win.
Heiskanen finished the game with five shots, one block, and the winning assist. Harley finished with no goals. Both defensemen played large roles in the win. The game did not establish a return date for Esa Lindell, who was scratched from the lineup.
The Stars completed the assignment for the night. The workload on the top two defensemen was visible in the ice time totals. The game ended with a single finish by Hintz that put the result out of reach for the Jets.
