The Wisconsin men’s tennis team finished its weekend schedule with a split result, winning at home and losing on the road. The Badgers are now 6-6 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten play. They remain without a victory in away matches this season.
On Friday afternoon, Wisconsin hosted Pennsylvania at Nielsen Tennis Center. The Quakers were 4-7 at the time of the match. Wisconsin had never defeated Pennsylvania in program history. Last season, the Badgers lost that matchup 4-3. This time, Wisconsin won 6-1.
The Badgers secured the doubles point first. Senior Josef Dodridge and junior Osgar O'Hoisin, the No. 1 pair, won their match 6-1. They remain unbeaten as a duo this season. Sophomores Daniel Soyfer and Chase Colton added a 6-2 victory.
In singles, Wisconsin won all but one match. Colton, Soyfer, and Dodridge all won in straight sets. Freshman Jesper Freimuth won 6-2, 6-3. O'Hoisin required three sets, winning 7-5, 4-6, 10-2.
Wisconsin then traveled to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to face Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders were 10-2 and had not lost at home this season. They had shut out five opponents. Wisconsin took the doubles point after O'Hoisin and Dodridge beat Chris Edge and Tom Moonen 6-4. Senior Chema Carranza and Freimuth also won 6-2.
Soyfer won his singles match 6-4, 6-3, extending his undefeated season record to 10-0. Middle Tennessee State then won the next three singles matches to lead 3-2. Dodridge tied the match at 3-3 with a 7-6, 6-1 victory. This left the final point to Carranza and Moonen at No. 2 singles.
Carranza lost the first set in a 7-6 tiebreak. He won the second set 6-1. In the deciding third set, Carranza led 5-4. Moonen recovered to win the set 7-5, securing the 6-5 victory for the Blue Raiders. Head coach Danny Westerman said the loss would help the team improve. "This one stings. We need to keep working. We put ourselves in these situations so we can eventually get over the hump," he told UWBadgers.com. Wisconsin returns to Nielsen Tennis Center next weekend for a doubleheader against Cornell and UW-Green Bay.
