Viktor Orban could become the next United Nations secretary-general if a proposed trilateral deal between Washington, Moscow, and Beijing comes to fruition. American officials have approached the former Hungarian prime minister to gauge his interest, and he has shown receptiveness despite not making a final decision.

The White House believes this strategy could secure at least eight votes from the 15-member Security Council, with the potential to reach ten. A State Department official noted that the concept initially seemed unlikely but argued that Orban’s profile offers a distinct advantage over the current field of diplomats. The official described him as the ideal candidate for MAGA conservatives, citing his stance on immigration and his clashes with European institutions.

Orban’s candidacy hinges on the alignment of the three major powers. US, Russian, and Chinese counterparts have reportedly agreed that a candidate with Orban’s nationalist background fits their criteria. He has expressed reservations about the role due to his identity as a political leader rather than a diplomat. He is also reportedly unwilling to launch a campaign unless he is confident of victory.

The positions of the United Kingdom and France remain the primary uncertainty. Both hold veto power and are permanent members of the Security Council. The report suggests they might accept a candidate backed by a council majority and the other three permanent members, but neither London nor Paris has taken an official stance.

The current race includes Emirati diplomat Lana Nusseibeh, who entered the competition last week and is reportedly gaining momentum. She is scheduled to answer questions on Tuesday, followed by an informal Security Council vote on Wednesday. That vote is designed to gauge support levels as members work toward a consensus. Antonio Guterres’s term concludes on December 31.

Sources indicate that Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to back Orban if he enters the race. Any public announcement of his candidacy would likely wait until after the US midterm elections. The initiative remains in the discussion phase, with no official confirmation of a tripartite support structure or a formal bid from Orban.
