Wisconsin's women's tennis team finished Saturday's doubleheader with a 6-0 season record after winning both matches by 7-0 margins. The Badgers first defeated Bradley before shutout Green Bay in the second contest.
This performance gives Wisconsin its best start to a season since 1992. Green Bay entered the second match with only five available players, a disadvantage that limited their ability to compete against the Badgers' depth.
Wisconsin established control in the doubles round. Freshman MaryAnn Rompf and senior Kelsey Grambeau defeated Theresa Tebon and Tallie Piaskowski 6-1. Sophomore Melissa Pick and freshman Lexi Keberle followed with a 6-0 victory over Maria Neff and Samm Pedersen.
The team maintained its dominance in singles, with no Wisconsin player dropping a set. Keberle won her match at first singles against Tebon, 6-1, 6-1. She now holds a combined 7-0 record in both singles and doubles. Rompf defeated Piaskowski 6-3, 6-1 at second singles.
Michelle Linden secured a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles. Pick shut out Neff 6-0, 6-0. Christina Zordani completed the sweep by beating Pedersen 6-0, 6-1, improving her single season record to 5-0.
Head coach Kelcy McKenna attributed the result to the team's focus on effort, attitude, and energy. She stated that the squad must continue managing daily drills and match simulations to prepare for the upcoming season. McKenna also identified doubles as an area for improvement, specifically citing serves, returns, and service play aggression as points to refine.
The team's next scheduled match is set for Feb. 9-12, when the Badgers will host the National Team Indoor Championship.
