Cowboys' 204-yard rushing surge exposes Eagles' defensive decline
A 38-21 loss on Monday night highlighted how easily Dallas dismantled Philadelphia's front seven, raising doubts about the unit's future.

The Philadelphia Eagles allowed the Dallas Cowboys to rush for 204 yards on Monday night, a performance that left the team with a 2-5 record and a five-game losing streak. The Cowboys scored 38 points in the victory, while the Eagles managed only 21. This result marks the sixth time in the Eagles' last 15 games that they have surrendered 399 or more total yards of offense.
The defensive line, which was expected to be a cornerstone of the roster, struggled against the Cowboys' simple, repeated run plays. Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott identified gaps in the Eagles' front seven, specifically targeting outside linebackers and defensive ends. The Cowboys ran the ball against specific players, including Jihaad Campbell, Jalyx Hunt, and Moro Ojomo, effectively forcing them out of the game. Veteran running back Javonte Williams rushed for 155 yards, the highest individual rushing total against the Eagles since 2022.
Linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. acknowledged the need for immediate improvement. "We need to fix that, because when an offense is able to run the ball like that, it opens up the whole offense," Trotter Jr. said. "We got to stop the run." Head coach Nick Sirianni noted that the issue was not isolated to a single factor, stating, "It's never one thing."
The struggle for the Eagles' defense is a departure from the unit's performance in recent seasons. In the final 17 games of the 2024 season, the Eagles allowed 399 or more yards only once. During the first 10 games of the 2025 season, they did not allow more than 387 yards in a single game. Since that point, the defense has allowed high yardage totals in a majority of games. Five of the seven highest yardage totals allowed under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio have occurred since Week 12 of the previous season.
Injuries have complicated the situation for the Eagles' defensive front. Jonathan Greenard, acquired from the Minnesota Vikings and signed to a contract extension, has battled injuries all season and was limited on Monday. Jalyx Hunt missed the previous week's game due to knee and ankle issues. Starter Nolan Smith Jr. sat out Monday's game while recovering from a concussion. Reserve Arnold Ebiketie, who entered the game, emphasized the need for physicality. "I think it's just a matter of being more physical, getting off blocks and creating negative plays," Ebiketie said.
The Eagles' defense was built on the premise that the 2024 unit represented a foundation for future success. Players such as Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Jalen Carter, and Jordan Davis were expected to continue improving. Instead, the unit has allowed high yardage totals with increasing frequency. The team must now evaluate its roster depth and defensive identity as it prepares for the remainder of the season.
The Eagles will face their next challenge after this loss, carrying the momentum of a five-game skid. The team's ability to stop the run will be a primary focus as they attempt to stabilize their defensive play.
