Mbappe Bets on 22 World Cup Goals to Defy Ballon d'Or History

The Real Madrid forward has no major trophies this season, but his record 22 World Cup goals and top scorer titles in two major leagues form a unique case for Monday's award.

Kylian Mbappe enters Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London as an underdog, facing a prize that traditionally rewards team success over individual statistics. While bookmakers favor other candidates, Mbappe argues that his individual performance in the 2025-26 season is sufficient to break a decade-long trend.

His strongest asset is a historic scoring record. During the 2026 World Cup in North America, Mbappe won the Golden Boot and became the all-time leading scorer in the tournament's history with 22 goals in 22 matches. He surpassed Lionel Messi, who holds 21 career World Cup goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe told RFI last month that overtaking these legends in the sport's most important tournament makes his case stand out.

He matched that international output with club dominance. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15. He stated that being the top scorer in all major competitions makes this a strong year for his bid. His club manager, Jose Mourinho, supported the nomination, noting that Mbappe made history this summer despite not playing for PSG or the Spanish national team.

The main obstacle to his bid is the absence of silverware. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. France placed fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff. This marks a second consecutive season without a major trophy for the forward.

Rival candidates have stronger team records. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane secured three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. These achievements align with the award's historical preference for winners who lift trophies.

In the last ten years, every Ballon d'Or recipient won at least one major title. Ousmane Dembele took the award in 2025 after helping PSG win their first Champions League title. Rodri won the award two years ago after lifting Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City. The pattern suggests that individual brilliance alone is rarely enough to secure the vote.

One precedent exists for a trophyless winner. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in 2013 after Real Madrid finished as league runners-up and Portugal failed to advance past the 2012 World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season. Mbappe has received nine nominations and finished third in 2023, but has yet to claim the prize.

Mbappe maintains that voters focus on a player's ability to create eye-catching moments rather than team results. He believes the individual nature of the award allows for a departure from the usual pattern of rewarding team triumphs.
