Barcelona hosts Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday to settle a rivalry that has remained tied for 124 years. Both clubs have accumulated 106 wins in their head-to-head history since their first meeting in 1902. A victory for either side will break the deadlock and establish a permanent lead in the all-time record book.
The fixture, known as El Clasico, has featured many of the sport's most recognizable names over the decades. Past matchups included Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, and Zinedine Zidane. Current attention focuses on Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona, while Real Madrid relies on Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr.
Historical context for Sunday's match includes several high-scoring encounters. In April 2017, Messi scored his 500th goal for Barcelona in a 3-2 win at the Santiago Bernabeu. That match also saw Sergio Ramos sent off after a two-footed lunge on Messi. James Rodriguez equalized in the 85th minute before Messi struck in the final kick of the game.
Another defining moment occurred in March 2007 when a 19-year-old Messi scored his first career hat-trick. He rescued a 3-3 draw for a Barcelona side playing with ten men. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real, and Ramos added a goal. Messi equalized in the first minute of stoppage time. Both clubs finished that season with 76 points, with Real Madrid taking the title on head-to-head record.
Real Madrid dominated a 4-2 home win in April 2005, showcasing their star-studded squad under president Florentino Perez. Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, Raul, and Michael Owen scored for the hosts. Barcelona, who later won the league by three points, found goals through Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho.
The highest-scoring match in the rivalry occurred on May 2, 2009, when Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Thierry Henry scored twice, and Gonzalo Higuain opened the scoring for the hosts. Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also found the net for Barcelona, who won the league that season by nine points.
The rivalry also extends to cup competitions. In the 2011 Copa del Rey final, Real Madrid won 1-0 in extra time after a goalless first 90 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo headed in a pass from Angel Di Maria. Di Maria was later sent off, but the goal secured Real's first domestic cup since 1993 and their first trophy under manager Jose Mourinho.
