The Alaska Senate race has become a focal point for national attention.

State and federal authorities have launched separate investigations into the primary process. The dispute centers on Senator Daniel S. Sullivan and a challenger named Daniel J. Sullivan. A New York Times report claims former staffers for Democratic nominee Mary Peltola sought a second Daniel Sullivan to act as a ringer. The goal was to confuse voters during the primary. Peltola denies she knew about the strategy. She told the Times, "I knew nothing about any other candidate on the ballot except for me and the incumbent. That is all I have ever known about. I am not interested in tricking voters."

President Trump ordered the Justice Department to probe the matter. He called the situation voter fraud at the highest level. FBI agents have already interviewed the challenger. The state governor also started an inquiry. The outcome of this race could determine which party controls the Senate.

Election officials expect a long wait for final results. Early voting and mail-in ballots are complicating the tally. The University of Florida Election Lab reports that more than 42 million people have voted early. That number is double what it was a week ago. More than 60 million people requested mail-in ballots, but only one-third have been returned. In Ohio, only two-thirds of requested mail ballots have come back. Most states will accept mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day. Final counts could take several days.

Economic issues are also driving voter turnout. Inflation currently stands at 3.7 percent. The price of a gallon of gas is $4.26, up from $3.05 a year ago. Diesel fuel costs $6.35 per gallon, compared to $3.62 last year. Home mortgage rates have risen above 7 percent. These costs affect household budgets nationwide. Voters in North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, and Alaska are weighing these factors as they head to the polls.

Meanwhile, the White House is weighing military options. Two U.S. diplomats told the Associated Press that President Trump is considering strikes on Iran after the midterms. Allies have been told to expect retaliation from Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on social media that Tehran continues to give diplomacy a chance. The White House has not commented publicly.

In other news, a federal judge ruled that the Justice Department illegally fired former Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey. District Judge Jesse Furman noted that Comey received high praise from supervisors. Her lawyers called the decision a victory for civil servants. Separately, prosecutors submitted a formal information against her father, former FBI Director James Comey. They allege he leaked classified information from a decade ago. Comey has not been formally charged yet. A federal grand jury also declined to indict former Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson regarding her testimony on January 6, 2021.

The next round of voting is scheduled for Tuesday.
